The cuisine here is robust, earthy, and designed for the cold weather.
Influenced by both Tamil and Malayalam cultures, and powered by the abundant fresh produce, Vattavada's food is unlike typical Kerala fare.
1. Garlic Kanji (Rice Porridge)
The ultimate comfort food. Made with the potent Vattavada Garlic (GI Tagged), this rice porridge is consumed on cold misty mornings. It warms the body and boosts immunity. It's often served with a spicy 'Chammanthi' (chutney).
2. Strawberry Honey
Not a syrup, but pure honey infused with the essence of strawberry blossoms. Local farmers also make a chunky Strawberry Jam that uses no preservatives—just fruit and sugar, cooked over firewood.
3. Winter Veggie Thoran
In most of Kerala, 'Thoran' (stir-fry) is made with beans or cabbage. In Vattavada, you get Carrot Thoran or Butter Beans Curry. The vegetables are harvested hours before cooking, making them incredibly sweet and crunchy.
Must Try
Ask for 'Chukku Kaapi' (Dry Ginger Coffee) with jaggery at local tea shops. It clears the sinuses instantly.
