They carry their children on their backs, and their history in their hearts.
The Muthuvan tribe is the indigenous community of these hills. Their name 'Muthuvan' roughly translates to 'those who carry something on their back'. Legend says they carried the idol of the Goddess Kannagi on their backs when fleeing from Madurai.
Unique Customs
- The Kudi System: They live in settlements called 'Kudis', governed by a 'Kani' (Tribal Head). The Kani's word is law.
- Marriage by Capture: Historically, a young man had to 'capture' his bride from the forest (a ritualistic hide-and-seek), proving his skill and worthiness.
- Guardians of Nature: They harvest honey and spices sustainably. They consider the Shola forests sacred and protect them from exploitation.
When you visit Vattavada, respect their privacy. Do not enter a Kudi without strict permission and a local guide.
